How do I import the latest USDA nutrition data?

The USDA periodically releases new versions of its nutrition data. The current version is SR27. You can import the USDA data file into Living Cookbook and your ingredients, recipes, menus and meals will be updated to include the new data.

When you import the data file you will be given three options: 1) Only import new ingredients; 2) Only update existing ingredients; and 3) Import all ingredients. The USDA data file is not organized into folders so the thousands of new ingredients will put into a new folder named "New USDA Ingredients". To avoid having to organize the new ingredients into their proper folders we recommend the following:

  1. Download the zipped SR27 data file by clicking here.
  2. Unzip the downloaded file.
  3. Run Living Cookbook.
  4. On the File menu, select Import.
  5. Select the unzipped data file (SR27.mdb) and click Open.
  6. Select "Only update existing ingredients". We will import the new ingredients separately.
  7. Click Next. The import will start. It will take a few minutes.
  8. Once the import completes, click Finish.

Now that we have updated all of your existing ingredients, let's import the new ingredients. We have prepared an FDXZ file that contains all of the new ingredients in SR27 organized into their proper folders. Please try the following:

  1. Download the zipped ingredients file by clicking here.
  2. Unzip the downloaded file.
  3. Run Living Cookbook.
  4. On the File menu, select Import.
  5. Select the unzipped ingredient file (new-usda-ingredients-sr27.fdxz) and click Open.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Under Import Target, select Use Folder Names from Import File.
  8. Under Duplicate Ingredients, select Skip Ingredients with Duplicate Ingredient Names.
  9. Click Next. The import will start. It will take a few minutes.
  10. Once the import completes, click Finish.
If the your ingredient data is from SR25 or earlier, you will also need the new ingredients in SR26. Please try the following:
  1. Download the zipped ingredients file by clicking here.
  2. Unzip the downloaded file.
  3. Run Living Cookbook.
  4. On the File menu, select Import.
  5. Select the unzipped ingredient file (new-usda-ingredients-26.fdxz) and click Open.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Under Import Target, select Use Folder Names from Import File.
  8. Under Duplicate Ingredients, select Skip Ingredients with Duplicate Ingredient Names.
  9. Click Next. The import will start. It will take a few minutes.
  10. Once the import completes, click Finish.

We will update this knowledge base article as new USDA data files become available.
